helping individuals with HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN
DESIGNING FOR THE HUMAN DIMENSION
For this category of focus, I ask myself, how can I create a product for a specific individual or group of people? From there I think about the possible issues that individuals may face such as certain illnesses, and medical problems.
PROBLEM & SOLUTION
The problems that athletes suffer from with Type 1 Diabetes are the amount of weight carried on the body during physical activity, inconvenience of constant finger pricking when monitoring glucose levels, and insecurity when wearing and dealing with the devices.
My goal is to minimize the amount of weight carried on the body during physical activity, create an all in one insulin pump and glucose monitor, and to have the player confident in wearing his medical device.
MEET JAXON
A seventeen year old high school soccer player that suffers from Type 1 diabetes. He is an active team member and needs an insulin pump that doesn’t bother him while playing.
Finding my idea
In the first phase of sketching, I explore multiple concepts for individuals that suffer different problems. These concepts vary from smart plates, portable breast pumps, prosthetic legs, eye masks, emergency medical packages, etc.
Concept selection
After exploring multiple ideas, I decided to move forward with the insulin pod and arm band for people with Type 1 Diabetes.
EXPLORATION & METHODS
Here I explore different ways to put and secure the arm band. After more refinement and mock up testing, I decide to go with the one side strap method as it is the most practical, simple, and sturdy way of securing the pod, and putting it on.

DESIGNING THE POD
What I had in mind for the insulin pod was to create something small, but impactful. I wanted to focus on the dual feature of being able to check blood sugar levels along with giving the player insulin when needed.
THE POD
Provides small amounts of insulin and monitors glucose levels all in one tiny pod.
SIMPLE APPLICATION
Peel off the back sticker, apply the pod to your arm, and stick onto the skin with the adhesive backing. Press on the button on top to activate the cannula insertion.

T1-ACTIVBAND
Is an arm band created for athletes suffering from Type 1 Diabetes. The pod gives automatically checks sugar levels and provides insulin to the user when needed. The band helps to protect the pod, and stabilize it in place when playing high impact sports.
This wearable device diminishes the amount of weight carrying on the body during physical activities. It is also more convenient to have than the constant finger pricking and act of having to insert your insulin.
This gives patients the opportunity to become confident in their condition, while being able to hide their medical device in a more compact and fashionable way.
